Three Steps to Save Darfur:

1. SIGN THE GLOBAL PETITION.

Dear President Bush:

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the continued suffering of civilians in Darfur, Sudan, and eastern Chad. More than four years on, the conflict has led to some of the worst human rights abuses imaginable. Hundreds of thousands of civilians have been killed by deliberate and indiscriminate attacks, and more than 2.5 million civilians have been displaced.
Time is running out.
We therefore strongly urge you to use the authority of your office to:
• Set a timeline and benchmarks for the deployment of the African Union/UN peacekeeping force in Darfur;
• Protect displaced civilians in neighboring eastern Chad and support a UN presence there;
• Ensure sufficient support for African Union and UN peacekeepers to protect civilians and stabilize the region.
We urge you to stand with other world leaders to actively work to protect human rights in Darfur today.

3. TAKE ACTION.

The conflict in Darfur has spread to eastern Chad causing a regional rights crisis. Thousands of civilians – including both Darfuri refugees and internally displaced Chadians – are vulnerable to attacks by Sudanese Janjawid and Chadian militia.

Recognizing China's unique relationship with Sudan, the U.S. Senate has introduced legislation to urge China to take full advantage of its influence to press Sudan to end atrocities and protect civilians in Darfur. Call on your Senators to co-sponsor this important legislation.

China has sent mixed messages to Khartoum, but is now increasingly indicating that Khartoum must accept the compromise UN/AU hybrid force. Call on your Representatives to urge China to protect civilians in Darfur.

Thousands of women and girls have been raped, child soldiers have been recruited, whole villages looted and destroyed, and an estimated 120,000 people have been forced from their homes in eastern Chad. Some have been desperate enough to escape into Darfur. Urge Chad to accept peacekeepers to protect displaced civilians.

Darfuri minors Abdelrhman Zakaria Mohamed and Ahmed Abdullah Suleiman have been sentenced to death by a Sudanese court. Call on Sudan to uphold their right to protection from the death penalty, as recognized under international law.

Call on Russia to take steps to support the deployment of these peacekeepers in Darfur and to work with other countries on the Security Council to strengthen and enforce the arms embargo.
